Why I recommend Optos® Retinal Exam

The Optomap Retinal Exam is the first ophthalmic device capable of producing a single, high-resolution ultra-widefield image of the retina without the need for dilation of the pupil.

The Optomap captures a retinal image of up to 200 degrees which can then be analyzed by our clinic. In comparison, conventional retinal imaging is only able to capture a small area of the retina at a time, generally 30-45 degrees. Incorporating the latest in scanning technology and using low-powered red and green laser beams to capture a retinal image, the Optomap provides a permanent digital record of an individual's eye health that is immediately displayed for review.

The increased retinal viewing area and the permanent photo-documentation help in the early detection and monitoring of eye diseases.

Many eye diseases, if detected at an early stage, can be treated successfully without vision loss. These include Diabetic Retinopathy, Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Retinal Detachment. A comprehensive retinal exam can also detect signs of other diseases that affect not only your eyes, but your overall health, such as high blood pressure.

The Optomap Exam allows us make accurate diagnoses quickly and without patient discomfort. The non-invasive procedure results in a full colour digital retinal image that is captured in less than a ΒΌ of a second. The exam saves both time and the hassle of leaving the clinic with light sensitivity and blurred vision resulting from pupil dilation.

  • Based on the results of your Optomap Retinal Exam, our clinic may elect to perform a dilated exam.
